Shannon

Name Nerds main

FOR REAL: Shannon began as an Irish surname, an anglicized form of Ó Seanáin (descendant of Seanán, or little Sean) or Ó Seannacháin (descendant of Seannachán, a name meaning "old; ancient"). It was used for boys more often than girls until the late 20th century it became popular for girls in the USA along with other Irish word/place derived names like Erin, Colleen and Kerry. In Ireland a major river is the Shannon, and Shannon is also a town as well as the name of Ireland's major international airport. In this context, Shannon is the English version of Sionainne, which is derived from the name of the Celtic goddess Sionna. The name has only recently begun to be used in Ireland.
