Tracy, Tracey

Name Nerds main

FOR REAL: Tracy started out as an English surname, a form of a Norman name meaning "from Thracius." It is also an Irish surname, an anglicizatino of Ó Treasaigh, which comes from the personal name Treasach, meaning "warlike." As a first name, it was originally used for boys. However, in the 20th century, it started being used for girls, probably as a result of people seeing the movie Philadelphia Story (1940) starring Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord and then the 1956 musical remake High Society starring Grace Kelly.
