Vanessa

Name Nerds main

FOR REAL: Vanessa was created by the Irish author Jonathan Swift as an homage to his friend Esther VanHomrigh for his poem 'Cadenus and Vanessa' (1726). Later in the 18th century, entomologist Johan Christian Fabricius (1745-1808) named a genus of butterflies (commonly known as the Red Admiral) Vanessa, most likely after the poem. However, because of this, many baby name books list Vanessa as meaning "butterfly."
