FOR REAL: This name, the name of a princess in Polish fairy tales, was introduced to the English language by the author Ouida in her 1883 novel Wanda, though the name didn't become popular in the English speaking world until the 1940s and the introduction of American Actress Wanda Hendrix (b. Dixie Wanda Hendrix in 1928). The name's origins are obscure; it may be derived from the Vandals (called Wendlas in Anglo-Saxon), a tribe of Slavonic peoples who lived in Northeastern Germany in the middle ages.
